ok, i know there is already a favorite song topic, but which mm song just really got you hooked on the band? For me, it would have to be "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine" cause its the first mm song i ever heard and i was amazed right off the bat.

hmmmm, falling in love with modest mouse was a gradual thing for me.. I knew I liked them a lot ever since I heard "third planet" in the fall of 2001, but it wasn't until half a year later and I'd heard like, all of their songs that I suddenly realized they were my favorite band. I just kept discovering lots of great songs along the way, and with every song I heard, the ones I'd heard before seemed better. BUT, I would say that even though I heard "third planet" first and liked it a lot, "dramamine" probably stands out as the song that sent me down the path to eventually hearing and loving everything they've done.. when I heard "third planet" it was like "good song, I like this band, I'll listen to more stuff by them sometime" but "dramamine" was the song that I could say with confidence was one of the best songs ever and expect anyone to agree. if ever I would recommend modest mouse to anyone back then, "dramamine" is what I would tell them to listen to. it has never been my favorite song by them, even when I first heard it, probably because it has always seemed to be on some other level.. my friends and I agreed once that saying "dramamine" is your favorite modest mouse song is like saying "stairway to heaven" is your favorite led zeppelin song (I barely know led zeppelin but the comparison makes sense).. hmm. what a perfect song.

I like the comparison to Led Zeppelin: I am a big Zep fan and obviously Stairway to Heaven in mind-blowing but i can't say that it is my favorite Zeppelin song. Right now that honor would go to Over the Hills and Far Away.

I was about 6 or 7 when I was rummaging through my older brother's CD collection. There was some Dead Milkmen, Nirvana and some other bands. Then I noticed a CD called "Modest Mouse" I took a look at it because it had an interesting name. Popped it in my CD player and clicked through the different songs. I then came across "Dirty Fingernails" and from there on I was totally hooked. 7 years later they're still my favorite band of all time.

Woah, that's cool!

I really don't remember what song it was that got me hooked but I do know that my friend Eddie (who by the way, runs "The Board that Ate Itself :p ) made me a cd and added a song from Modest Mouse on it and I fell in love with it instantly, which blew my mind since I thought Modest Mouse was a heavy, raunchy band (like Metallica...don't ask me why I thought such of course) but anyway, I instantly went out and bought The Moon & Antarctica and the rest is history. I've never fallen for a band so fast, like I did w/Modest Mouse.

dramamine for me.

i borrowed some cd's in a cd wallet from my cousin, so there were no cases or anything. Randomly i put in this is a long drive... without knowing who the band was. That first bass line and drum beat got me hooked, so mesmerizing.

man, what an incredible track to start your recording career with.

back in 98 i was living in exile in florida, forcing myself to get educated. my "music buddy" came down to see ashow i was involved in and her first night in she handed me a tape and said "this will be yer new favorite band." at the time i was a built to spill disciple and the previous year she said the same thing when she clued me into mag earwhig and pollard never did take the title, so i was sceptical. i started listening to long drive and it didn't really blow me away at first listen but something about it kept me playing it over and over. about a month later i took a road trip up to st. Augustine and suddenly "ionizes and atomizes" started working its magic on me. i listened to it over and over for about two hours (driving my friends a little crazy i think: this is when all my friends were still stuck in the whole radio shtick) and since that day the mouse has been it for me. I will say however that grey ice water has been my favorite song EVER since i heard it.

So thanks jess you were right. oh, and all my friends love modest mouse...i demand it or they are GONE!!!

i am a little ashamed to say that it took me this long...but the song that got me was "night on the sun"..i was riding in a car with a not so great friend who put this song on and instantly i knew it was it was a great band and a great song...ever since i have consumed there catalog and aquired a taste for all the incarnations of this band..but night on the sun just sounded like everthing i have always liked in alt/rock..

I think it might have been convenient parking or trailer trash but i noo have a good memory. does anyone know of a live recording/bootleg where someone introduces the band as "modest fuckin' mouse" with a real southern drawl ( i think?) this was the first modest mouse i heard but i soon lost the song somehow and now i cant find it or remember which track it was?

ModestDan haha I did the same thing. About ...5 or 6 years ago I looked through my brothers CDs and found a long drive...I put it in and would listen to Dramamine, Ohio, Beachside Property, and She Ionizes And Atomizes over and over again. Thats how I got into them but my brothers friends would make fun of me for the fact that I listened to a band they loved and I was in 4th / 5th grade. Long Drive Home is still my fav cd of all bands to this day though.

I sat down and listened to my 128kbps mp3 copy of Lonesome Crowded West back in 1997 and 70+ minutes later I was in love. I'm not sure which song hooked me...maybe Trailer Trash, but I don't think it took that long.

See, I'm thinking that maybe the song that got me converted was Trailer Trash too, but I can't remember. :? I DO know that I fell in love w/this song the first time I heard it (as if anyone couldn't?).

I really wish I could remember what song it was that got me hooked but I can't. *arf*

Trailer Trash is just so damn epic. I agree that if anyone doesn't fall in love with it right away they must be dead of comatose. It's still my favorite song at full volume. I love listening to the last 3-4 minutes of it and knowing all the little guitar sounds. Oh, what a song. :tu:
