I've loved Modest Mouse for soooo long, but they have really been disappointing me lately :( . How many releases have they had this year? And his only defense to "selling-out" in the filter article was that the people who criticize him are "hipsters with trust funds who can afford to have those principles" !?!?! What a copout!
So I go to see the show on Monday in San Diego and it was their worst show I've seen. After their instruments were all set up they sat there untouched and made us wait for like a half an hour! sounds pretty rockstarish to me. Then Isaac comes on the stage and he's totally wasted!!! He plays so sloppy and seems like he doesn't even want to be there. He's hostile towards the crowd. Sure some of the new fans are idiots and they were yelling out some dumb stuff...but if you think about it, they got paid to have all those dumb fans. Those people weren't there a few years ago when no one knew who they were. Someone who went to the LA show also said it seemed like he didn't want to be there and was trying to get it over with. It's a shame. I guess money really doesn't buy happiness.
Anybody else have any thoughts on our favorite bands new found fame ?

I do. I say Good For Them. Its about time people start liking Modest Mouse. Who cares if they only like them because of the new album? Im sure they will pick up some of their older albums and fall in love with those too. It really isnt that big of a deal, is it? I mean come on, so what if more people start liking them? Its not like they were going to stay "Underground" forever. Sure it dissapoints me that people are liking them because of the new album. But oh well I say.
Probably the worst two cents you're ever going to read.
does nirvana suck because people like them?
does u2 suck because people like them?
as long as they keep making good music, who cares.

hmmm... well i agree with both of you..I think that its about damn time that they get some exposure and get the fame they really deserve...we can't have our little band to our selves forever.I personally don't care if they give their songs to comercials or they signed with a major lable..at least they are writing their own songs, which is more than i can say for allot of "artists" nowadays..so for that im proud of them.. :tu: but i did see them live a while ago and was pretty dissapointed as well..he did seem a little irratable and was pretty wasted and gave a ramshackle preformance of their beautiful songs ..and from what i can tell they have given less than perfect preformances since about 1999..but i think that has NOTHING to do with them getting famouse and EVERYTHING to do with his growing alchol addiction that he has sang about since lonesome crowded west and now i beleave it has cought up with him.. I have seen and heard bootlegs that were great so i know its not that they are a sucky live band, cuz i have proof of other wise.. i think he's eventually gonna need to clean up and get his act together or his fame will be all for not when music journalists start warning people that their just a "studio" band.. I still love them and almost worship them for the great songs they have given to us but i was sad that they couldn't give them back to me live.. But im glad that someone else has been brave enough to say that they can do wrong

You guys are missing the point (except for 3rdplanetboy)! I'm not complaing that lots of people like them now. I was really looking forward to the show the other day because the other two times I saw them they rocked! But his heart wasn't in it this week. He seemed like he was annoyed by the audience and he was just trying to get through the set. He didn't put any effort into it! The fact is I paid $20 (that's more than I've ever paid before) and it was the worst performance. And remember that they could have all the fans in the world without selling their songs to corporate products and signing with big corporate labels...it's called word of mouth and it's what they had a few years ago, and look how many fans they had. Time would have only made it better....don't believe me? Fugazi is living proof of a completely respectable band.....BUT that's another subject and it's not what I'm talking about.

Well, if you were on the road almost all the time, you would want to do some really good shows, and others you wouldnt care about. Thats how people are, one day they play all great and are friendly, the next they're all moody and just want the day to be done. And besides the fact, you said people were yelling out some mean stuff didnt you? Well in that case I would be pissed to, even if I werent all drunk I'd be pissed at them, just more so when I'm drunk. So you see, their always going to do good shows and bad shows. That's just how it is.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the band's performance at that gig. It's funny because the first time I saw them live, I didn't know what to expect but I wasn't disappointed not one bit but at one show I attended, I was stora turned off how Isaac nearly punched a kid since he wouldn't shut up when Isaac asked him too. Didn't make sense since who doesn't talk when they're at a gig? :?
O'well, still think MM rock's live...well, the shows that I've seen they have. As for their new found fame, I'm not really seeing too much of it at this point but maybe the video might change this? We'll see...

Modest Mouse has definately gained some new fans over the last year or so,but I don't see them 'taking off' or anything. They're just finally getting noticed for their genius.
As for MM live,I think they are amazing.I've seen them twice, once last september and once recently at the St.Augustine show. Both were excellent, the one in St.A may have even been my favorite concert ever. But after being on the road for awhile, you are going to have your good days, and your bad days, especially if you like to drink like Isaac does.I don't know of any band that put on an 'electric',perfect show every night.Even alot of the Rolling Stones shows were pure shit.
We all know that Isaac takes jabs at the audience,he has always done this.I find it amusing. What other band do you know will look at you right in the face and tell you to go fuck yourself.I love it!Plus you can't take everything he says seriously,he admits he has a fucked sence of humour. He just says whats on his mind, nothin' wrong with that.I'd hate for him to start censoring himself.

See the thing about modest mouse which I love and hate is that they could care less about the people, they are not doing it for them. They dont feel as if they have any obligation to satisfy their fans when their playing a live show. I've seen them five times...three of which have been absolutely incredible, without a doubt up there with the best concerts i've seen. The other two were extremely dissapointing, mostly because I had experienced the shows that i considered to fantastic. The shows that i found dissapointing were only dissapointing because I had the opportunity to see them when they were at their best. Their worst shows I still enjoy more than 99 percent of the music out there, so to criticize them for not fully committing themselves to each concert is definitely selfish. What annoys me most about the band is the lack of variety in their setlists. I do not think they ever play their best songs live. Songs like alone down there, tiny city made of ashes, stars are projectors, life like weeds are hardly ever played and its some of their best new material. Let alone mostly all of long drive, and a ton of lonesome crowded. I know he has a thing about going into his past and playing his older songs, but still its just bizzare, and quite frustrating that a band refuses to play their best songs. I guess you just go along with it, your not gonna change them so you just accept the way they are. or you stop giving your money to them
