After all this time I think maybe I should listen to Modest Mouse. What do they sound like? Will I like them?

personally i love every song they have, but it took me a while.
they sound very experiemental (but not heavy metal type experimental) and do stuff about no other band has/will do. thats why i like them so much, tho.
id start with "3rd planet" "trailer trash" and "cowboy dan" if you want to ease into them, then theyll just take you
everything that keeps me together is falling apart

GREAT suggestion!
And I would include maybe:
Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe in (Positive Negative)
Polar Opposite
Polar Opposite was the major 'click' for me. It was this song that I couldn't get enough of, and played non-stop for weeks. It spoke to me unlike any song I've heard at that time, and it's still one of my all time favorites out of MM's collection. Definitely worth checking out.

P.S. my ex-boyfriend is gonna 'try' to see Modest Mouse in Denver come November and I'm not even gonna suggest any song for him to hear before hand, despite him never hearing of this band. I just know if he goes to a live show, he'll be converted into a fan. I mean, how could he not? :D

I love Building Nothing out of Something (which is a CD, not a song), but this MAY NOT be your best 1st MM album. Start with Long Drive or The Lonesome Crowded West and go from there.

i don't know, i think that Building Nothing is a great album to start off with, it slightly easier to digest than some of the others

I would highly suggest "Building Nothing Out of Something" and then, "The Moon & Antarctica." It's a great starting point which gives the listener a great taste of what MM is like. Well, *imo* of course.

P.S. phenix199, that line "I'm trying; I'm trying to drink away the part of the day that I cannot sleep away" moved me greatly. I think we've all had moments in our lives that this line can relate to, which is why I love this song. Simple lyrics but extremely powerful lyrics!!!!

amen emmy, i love isaacs lyrics. they make the ordinary seem so huge, they really connect with me.
as far as beginner albums,
i would say lonesome crowded west.
moon and antarctica is a little to mysterious for a first listener.

yeah lcw, then the moon and antartica i'd say, because this was the first mm album i got and it really hit me as being an amazing album althogether, but lcw has their best moments as far as individual songs.

I first got hooked on TMAA.... I listened to it a couple times in the background and decided that it was alright.... But the song that first jumped out at me was Stars Are Projectors. Mind you, it was Lives & Life Like Weeds that made them my favourite band. :)
Took me a little while to get used to the older stuff. But sooner or later, I discovered songs like Dramamine, Talking Shit About A Pretty Sunset, Trailer Trash, Cowboy Dan, Bankrupt On Selling & Broke.
They really are a phenomenal band. And now's probably a really good time to start listening. They've quite the extensive back catalogue... and by the time you're done sifting your way through that, they'll have a new record out.
