i was uploading a few modest mouse songs on my comp and under the genre they call it "emo"...first of all i think "emo" is the dumbest excuse for a genre buzz word that the main stream media slaps on bands they can't really classify. Kinda like they did with "grunge" in the early 90s. first they called nirvana and pearl jam grunge and that was ok but when they slapped it on bands like collective soul and STP that bugged me..and now when they call modest mouse "emo" it buggs the fuck out of me because they have used that same word for bands i despise like dashboard confessionals and vandeta red and modest mouse sounds nothing like those bands...Just put a message if u agree with me that the media needs to stop trying so hard to classify bands into stupid buzz words. and answer if your stupid enough to think that MM is "emo"..but u better back it up!!

modest mouse is NOT emo because Modest Mouse is good.
If modest mouse was bad I would call them emo but they sound NOTHING like emo.

emo=emotional music
last time i checked, existentialism was not that emotional
emo=emotional music
last time i checked, existentialism was not that emotionalman i think that modest mouse should be considered emo..just because they dont sound like those other bands they are emotional to me. isaac makes me feel like i should be sitting there listening to his shit all day long. mm is emo. and indie. - independant.

NO WAY....emo is soooo stupid..and as far as that bull shit about "emotion in music = emo", that is so dumb..every kind of music has emotion..thats why its music..you can't take a common broad feeling in like emotion and exploit it and make it genre out of it..or else u would have to call whitney huston and Juel "emo" too. These MTV types make more out of this label than just having emotion in the lyrics or music.. by emo they meen whiny poser punk wananbees who sing like chipmunks and have hair cuts like Greg Brady. these "emo" fucks are just kids who wanted to be punk but got their ass kicked in high school, so they decided to play the guitars acoustic and sing stupid, EMOTIONLESS, corny love songs to get laid..modest mouse is far to realistic and sarcastic to be emo...and most of all their too GOOD.

Saw someone viewing this thread, thought I'd put in my two cents. First off emo is a dumb genre name, and the emo thats popular today is much different then the style from the 80s and early 90s that the Mouse are being compared to. Modest Mouse do have some aspects of an Emo band in the traditional sense of the word, but they are nothing like Taking Back Sunday or anything like that. Who cares about genres though, Modest Mouse are a great rock'n'roll band, they've done everything from trippy jam music, to dancey post-punk. Also Isaac lyrics are remniscent of a philosopher more then anything Drive like Jehu, or Sunny Day Real Estate did (two actual emo bands).
modest mouse aint emo.
i can see why a few early songs you could say sound emo but the little bit of real emo music ive run into is the dark riff repeating a few times then some drums and yelling.
that isnt modest mouse, and if you want to classify mm you would say they were indie, and now theyre just alternative. simple.

Indie is also just as dumb as emo, it's not used to label bands on independent labels anymore, just a group of different genres. But if you've heard Sunny Day Real Estate, and alot of the early emo stuff, you'd see an influence on MM. They're a rock'n'roll band plain and simple. They dabble in many different genres all rooted in rock n roll.
ok, i have nothing to back myself up on the emo sound, the only bands ive listened to a little were m blanket, republic of the freedom fighters and breakwater. doubt they ring any bells but they were early bands of people in good bands now.
i guess i agree with indie has become a label (no pun intended or anything, nothing having to do with a record label, more like a paper label) not an actual genre meaning independent labels, but i still try to think of it that way.

Sunny Day Real Estate, The Promise Ring, Rites of Spring, Indian Summer, Drive Like Jehu area ll bands like this. If you like MM you'll probably like most of them, and they don't sound anything like Taking Back Sunday or Thursday. The second wave of emo with Jawbox and At the Drive-In really is the common bridge between the early emo bands and bands like TBS and Thursday. I really like Jawbox and ATDI, most of the popular bands now took their sound and watered it down a shit load, and lost the high energy of the music.
But plain and simple the main thing is that Modest Mouse are a rock'n'roll band plain and simple.

Read my post you are thinking of a different emo. It shouldn't piss you off. While that tag isn't exactly correct cuase they aren't straight up emo, it shouldnt offend you or anything. There were some great bands with that tag.
i think you thinking of the stereotype (im not sure if i should say this) for emo being people who go into a little black dark room, put on some super loud drumming with loud guitar riffs and yelling, and cut their wrists. im just saying this is what is now thought of in the non-emo high school world when you say someones emo.
i know this is referring to people not a genre.

although i don't like it when modest mouse is labeled "emo", it is understandable why people deem it so. i mean emo kids listen to mm, and some songs could be considered emo. so it doesn't surprise me that some people thuink it's emo. i personally feel it is indie rock so yeah that is good enough for me.

I don't really care what people call what.. The genres have gotten all out of whack anyways.. So whatever. All I know is what I like and I like Modest Mouse.

more than any other band i know, modest mouse is the absolute best at perfectly capturing and communicating an emotion, so yes they are emotional - but they are not "emo" as in the eyeliner wearing frat boy d-bags

Fugazi and Sunny Day Real Estate are both considered the principle acts in re-popularising the emo genre back in the 90's, and they share many of the same musicial principles(Music, Lyrical Themes, D.I.Y. approach, etc) as the mouse...So in that regard they are emo... But are they like My Chemical Romance and the other such bands that are considered emo, no... But the label can be used...You just have to know bad emo from good emo...

Here's my opinion on good emo versus bad emo:
Good emo -
Fugazi (if you wanna call them that)
Rites of Spring
SDRE
Texas is the Reason
early Get Up Kids
Jimmy Eat World up until/including Clarity
Brand New's Deja Entendu
Jawbreaker
early Saves the Day
Thursday
The Promise Ring
Bad emo -
Jimmy Eat World post-Clarity
all other Brand New
The Used
Story of the Year
Finch
Panic!
Something Corporate
Hawthorne Heights
later Get Up Kids
Fall Out Boy
MCR
Taking Back Sunday
Straylight Run
Coheed and Cambria (arguable)
New Found Glory
The Startling Line
later Saves the Day
Dashboard
Bands that get called emo far too much -
Bright Eyes
Elliott Smith
Modest Mouse
764-Hero
The Shins
In my opinion, "modern" emo is also pretty sexist. It creates a really misogynist view of women as cold-hearted cheaters, liars and backstabbers that isn't always fair.

I never bash people for using the wrong genre, because I'm not that good at it myself. I don't care if some calls modest mouse emo unless it's used as a negative aspect. I think the worst part is that people see emo as an insult now, and give it stereotypical brandishings.
Damn it all
02-19-2007, 07:21 PM
Some emo bands are good, but people who use the wrong genre generally don't have much knowledge of music anyway.

Well I used to use a forum where people got into big arguments over the slightest sub gernres. If someone calls Modest Mouse rock or emo I don't care because to an extent they are, and if they called them country or something I probably wouldn't respect their opinions as much, but I wouldn't argue over it, because they aren't hearing anything different than me.

Emo, Meaning Emo-tional.
Emo, also being confused with todays Sh** for music, but often forgot the true meaning: Emotional.
Now if Modest Mouse's lyrics arent emotional, then I don't know what is.

its the "official" band, at least now. Im not sure who you mean, joe plummer is the 2nd drummer on the left and Jeremiah is on the right, unless you mean just right of Isaac, thats Tom Peloso, who worked with the band a few times before andn does standup bass and I think synth too. These people are right on top of the whole site, so you must've been gone for a while? its alrite :)
